Shout Outs

Thanks to Andrea Appleton and The City Paper for the nice write-up about the Lit Show. And yes, we are the gateway drug to literature.

Betsy Boyd’s short story, “Scarecrow,” received a Pushcart Prize in 2009. She has published stories most recently in Shenandoah, Unpleasant Event Schedule, and Verb: An Audioquarterly. Betsy was born and raised in San Antonio and now lives in Baltimore. She has received an Elliot Coleman Fellowship in fiction writing and a James A. Michener Fellowship in screenwriting. As an Alfred and Trafford Klots artist-in-residence in summer 2009, Betsy spent a month writing fiction in Rochefort-en-Terre in Brittany. The 2010 recipient of an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council, she is at work on a novel.

Jen Michalski’s novel THE TIDE KING is forthcoming from Black Lawrence Press (2013; winner of the Big Moose Prize), and her collection of novellas, COULD YOU BE WITH HER NOW, is forthcoming from Dzanc (2013). She is the author of two collections of fiction, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (So New, 2007) and FROM HERE (Aqueous Books, 2013). Her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. She also is the editor of the anthology CITY SAGES: BALTIMORE (CityLit Press 2010), which won a 2010 "Best of Baltimore" award from Baltimore Magazine. Finally, she is the founding editor of the literary quarterly jmww, a co-host of the monthly reading series The 510 Readings and the biannual Lit Show in Baltimore, and interviews writers at The Nervous Breakdown.

About: Howard Markman and Palookaville

A veteran of the Baltimore music scene, Markman has played with a variety of Mobtown bands from country to avant-garde, from folk-rock to R&B. He is probably most recognizable for his stints as guitarist with Baltimore’s premier improvising roots band Freewater in the ‘70s and with Disappear Fear, featuring Sonia, in the ‘90s. On his 2005 solo album, "Half Smiles Blue Skies," Markman drew from the instrumental prowess of the first band and the songwriting ambition of the second to carve out a personal collection of songs, exploring a life that sometimes gets dark, sad, and lonely but can still be a wild and deeply satisfying ride. His latest album, “Welcome to Smalltimore," was released last year, and he has just formed a new band called Palookaville.

The songs on his new album, “Welcome to Smalltimore”, combine pop sensibilities with a twangy guitar and a quirky worldview of a delighted cynic. With his new band, Palookaville, featuring an all-star cast, Howard continues to bring all this material to life, delighting the crowds, while continuing to evade the musical border police.
